<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Punctatum 24" x 36" Oil on Gallery Wrapped Canvas</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A few months ago, my husband's cousin wrote and asked if I could do a painting for his wife. She wanted a painting of Punctatum (aka wild azalea) for their foyer. She preferred oil and wanted it to be a generous size, 24" x 36". I've worked in a few different mediums, primarily watercolor and acrylic and have played around in oils a bit as well but it's not exactly my comfort zone. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
However... this is about the sweetest couple you could ever meet and I'd try about anything for them! So I did it!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Although the blooms have a fragile appearance, she wanted some pop. I studied a few photos and decided to feature one full bloom against a dark background. I am my harshest critic so I continue to pick it apart but overall, I'm pleased. It actually motivated me to try some others in oils in the future.<br />
<br />
NOW... I want to do this same subject using brilliant watercolors and see how that turns out! That way, they can take their pick!<br />
<br />
Until next time!<br />

<span style="font-size: large;">I've always found the creation of abstract work relaxing. It's been a while! I've been a busy lady over the last couple of years. I won't bore you with the details of my life. Suffice to say, I have not had much opportunity to blog about anything. I did, however, find time to paint! From small pieces to HUGE pieces. Let's start with those! They are part of my Jazz series. Why Jazz? Well... I saw the movie La La Land and got the jazz bug so all of these were painted to jazz music. You'll may even notice a rhythm in some of them. The title of first in the series, "Venice al Jazz" means "Paint to Jazz." And that I did!<br />

He's an avid fly fisherman, loves to golf, hike, camp... anything outdoors! So when we spotted these chairs at a local shop we looked at each other and said "Why not?" Who says office chairs have to be stuffy?</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">I've always heard people talk about drinking a "Black and Tan" and was never interested in trying one. But I saw a buffet painted using black on a portion of the piece and the rest left the natural wood. I loved it! And I just happened to have a piece that was a perfect candidate for a "Black and Tan" transformation.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/558158_585298858146942_1467374170_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/558158_585298858146942_1467374170_n.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">This is a very old piece but has been well cared for throughout the years. The finish inside the drawers was not done as well so I painted the drawer sides and inside the the black paint. I posted it on my FaceBook page and got tons of comments. I ended up selling it because I didn't really have a good place to put it when we moved. I just wanted to share in the event that it gave someone else an idea. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Wishing you all the best!</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Once I got it home it didn't take long to realize that this was the piece to have a little fun with. I liked the "frames" and decided they made this the perfect piece for my experiment.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">My initial vision was an abstract that would give the impression of a horizon... sky blues at the top gradually transitioning to greens at the bottom. However... I've been taking an oil painting class and we had just completed a landscape scene of Cades Cove (in the Smokey Mountains National Park) and I decided to overlay that scene. </span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I chose crystal knobs to replace the original (and missing) brass pulls and knobs. Hopefully they didn't take away from the painting. Evidently not... it sold pretty quickly! I wish I knew who purchased it so I could see where they used it and what the overall room looked like. I'm picturing a white room with contemporary accents. Looks nice! :-)</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">I bought this late 1800's dresser from a friend. The veneer on the top was in terrible shape and he had tried to take it off. It was a mess but I finally managed to get it off and then patched the rough spots in the dressers top. </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I found information on creating a crackle finish with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. Basically, you put put the paint on a little thick and then immediately heat it up with a hairdryer. The hot air dries it quickly and it cracks in a very natural and random pattern. You have to work in small sections,</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/73637_533986406611521_968174146_n.jpg" width="480" /></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">For fun, I painted the drawer sides with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint "Florence" and then used Modge Podge to line each drawer with pieces from "The Ladies Floral Cabinet" magazine dated 1876. I found a large stack of these in Vermont and they are so much fun to read!</span></div>

It was July since I last posted so I thought it would be a good idea to at least TRY to get some of the projects I've done on here so I can start 2013 fresh. The picture may not be the best but I got so caught up in doing that I didn't document as well. Nonetheless...I wanted to at least keep track and share with my blogger friends. So... here we go! </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Let's start with <span style="text-align: center;">JULY</span></span><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">I bought this 1930s kitchen table and chairs from a friend and painted them Annie Sloan's Old Ochre (my favorite ASCP "White") Since this picture, I've switched out the fabric on the chairs to a buffalo check.</span></td></tr>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">This set has an interesting story... The chairs were a Goodwill find at $6 each - handmade in Yugoslavia. The table base is the remains of a $5 table. I ripped the top off and painted the wooden base. The top... that's my favorite... I had a thick sheet of table glass that I had been given. It fit the table base perfectly. I flipped it over and started painting the design you see. Layer after layer (drying in between) until I had what you see here.</span></td></tr>

This time I spotted something that looked leather...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkPhzsEzg7ml021a3NuU4Ruv1ki66XXzlftH7zOTXdUd0OPNNGtQKSHPwre0C5EcHDyXTxnYunkY1w7NHCR5T0pVEXH_N0atdbuPAPLWBTxfTjY0OpJn902JnBumkse-nEYee2lpIMPUQ/s1600/001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkPhzsEzg7ml021a3NuU4Ruv1ki66XXzlftH7zOTXdUd0OPNNGtQKSHPwre0C5EcHDyXTxnYunkY1w7NHCR5T0pVEXH_N0atdbuPAPLWBTxfTjY0OpJn902JnBumkse-nEYee2lpIMPUQ/s320/001.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">It was a duffle bag. After a quick inspection I noted that it was like new. No signs of use. It was a Rawling leather duffle bag. Yep... Rawlings, as in Rawlings baseball glove company. So I bought it. For.... $19.99. Here's what is looks like.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPDSdq1L_q20fppBiHErmZfIa_o5MAJ1OqKbpOHOvWsSzKsuqwYp8AAlUK-gctfk4BD2IAbWNj8remw4EJjHGSPVy5MgpXWa_KMARTjrXbADmj1lS98d_eZIyar3BdIkd2F7QaZIXiYu0/s1600/Rawlings+Leather+Bag+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPDSdq1L_q20fppBiHErmZfIa_o5MAJ1OqKbpOHOvWsSzKsuqwYp8AAlUK-gctfk4BD2IAbWNj8remw4EJjHGSPVy5MgpXWa_KMARTjrXbADmj1lS98d_eZIyar3BdIkd2F7QaZIXiYu0/s400/Rawlings+Leather+Bag+2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I looked it up online. It's hard to find one in stock but when you do...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small;">A little blurry but the price... $559.99. It's cheaper on Orvis.com. Only $525!! </span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>My husband was very excited. Not about the deal... about keeping it. After a brief discussion, I convinced him that we were not in need of another piece of luggage! It's on E-Bay as we speak! Let's see what happens! Treasure sales proceeds would be great justification for some new draperies for my bedroom.<br />
<div><br />
</div><div>NOW... if I could just stumble on a sofa or chair made out of this leather for a good price... now THAT will be a SUPER DOOPER brag day!<br />
<br />
AN UPDATE! It sold for $490!!!<br />

This weekend I enjoyed a great Saturday afternoon with my new friend, Shannon! She had seen my work online and asked me to paint a couple pieces for her. </div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgg7EcA7ohwmi42MLZ7JO4yQFYhIxzuqT8GH36vgJBuDEFoC55AZllJJ2MDUQGLZHEtGhhGiU91n3Pk_qeGys00jU4sJMZ8__ia70SGG2gc0651cEoX-moAjNWZ7xRd7jv_SyV2gbsD7w/s1600/Recently+Updated1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgg7EcA7ohwmi42MLZ7JO4yQFYhIxzuqT8GH36vgJBuDEFoC55AZllJJ2MDUQGLZHEtGhhGiU91n3Pk_qeGys00jU4sJMZ8__ia70SGG2gc0651cEoX-moAjNWZ7xRd7jv_SyV2gbsD7w/s400/Recently+Updated1.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Before and After </td></tr>
</tbody></table><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">She had also mentioned wanting to learn how to paint so when she dropped them off, I told her she was welcome to have a one-on-one class if she wanted to stay. Her very sweet husband took the kids and kept them occupied for three hours while we <strike>played</strike> worked. Now THAT, my friends, is the sign of a "keeper!"</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWnvaWyQAtEjlo9Alx957E_Re8nUW0sbtrTuSv7ssJz7R7SaFrzZBndI3hQYqY7ocwAjwmK7_4Jt9mwBFhvj8EhimZDnzW6yzZwZsWc7LQeIo0LTvhxD-CWx6f2bezHfXGA2AkoYe0QNA/s1600/272.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWnvaWyQAtEjlo9Alx957E_Re8nUW0sbtrTuSv7ssJz7R7SaFrzZBndI3hQYqY7ocwAjwmK7_4Jt9mwBFhvj8EhimZDnzW6yzZwZsWc7LQeIo0LTvhxD-CWx6f2bezHfXGA2AkoYe0QNA/s400/272.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">She initially said she wanted it a solid yellow. She had a super cute pillow with yellow, turquoise, pink, and green and wanted to match the yellow. I had a turquoise primer so she decided to use that as a base coat and let a little show through. We switched out the knobs for crystal knobs and painted the un-exposed parts of the drawer with the turquoise for a fun pop of color when you open it. It turned out very cute! </td></tr>
</tbody></table><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">She also had a bookcase. It was stained but had a slightly rough finish. That makes for a great base for painting and distressing but required a little sanding. Not my favorite part of the process. (A reason I love Annie Sloan Chalk Paint!)</div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Before and After Bookcase</td></tr>
</tbody></table>We went with Sherwin Williams "Silvermist" for the bookcase. It's one of my favorites!!! A beautiful light blue gray with a touch of green. She wanted a little white to show through so we sprayed the edges with a light coat of white primer and it worked perfectly! We finished it off with and oil and beeswax finish. Love it! I hope Shannon enjoys it!<br />

<span style="font-size: large;">I love blogland! So many beautiful homes, so many creative projects, so many great journeys to take without leaving the comfort of my living room. However... my FAVORITE thing about blogland would have to be the gracious bloggers who share their ideas and encourage the rest of us to try new things. One of those people is Lyndsey Ballard at <a href="http://livingwithlindsay.com/2009/03/diy-boutique-tassels.html">Living with Lyndsey! </a> </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a256/dmdlnt/nestingplaceetsycom.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a256/dmdlnt/nestingplaceetsycom.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><span style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Look at her beautiful work <a href="http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a256/dmdlnt/nestingplaceetsycom.jpg">in one of two posts she has on tassels.</a> </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Thanks Lyndsey! So... here are my first attempts. Not as professionally executed as Lyndsey's but I like them. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">First up... Mary Englebreit's "Life... Get one!" I love Mary Englebreit's work and had this little figurine. I glued some wood pieces together and painted them for her base. The tassel is just a combination of random ribbon I had on hand. </span><br />

</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><span style="font-size: large;">I'm working on a few more. It's addicting! Tassels are a great way to add a little color and texture to a space. I hang them on lamps, furniture knobs, bedposts.... just about anywhere I need a little extra!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">A little funny...I was looking for a clever title to this post and saw an article titled "Do tassels and motherhood mix?" I'm thinking that they are referring to a different type tassel! As the mom of two burly college boys, this type tassel is probably much more likely to mix with motherhood in my world!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br />
